Sexual health & fertility

Deciding to have a child when you have cystic fibrosis requires a great deal of planning.

Because of the impacts cystic fibrosis (CF) has on the body, fertility can be more difficult.

For males, the tube connecting the testes and prostate gland can become blocked, leaving many men with CF infertile. However, certain fertility methods and surgical procedures can sometimes make it possible for these men to become fathers. Women with CF may be less fertile than other women, however, thanks to advancements in CF care and research, many of them are able to conceive and have successful pregnancies.

Genetic Testing should also be considered prior to conceiving.

Although parenting is not for everyone, it is important to understand that having kids is a very real possibility for people with CF if it is something they wish to pursue.

Whilst these discussions are best to be had with your CF Care Team, Fact Sheets for both Female and Male Reproduction can be found below.
