2024 CFACT Reflections

Cystic Fibrosis ACT: 2024 Year in Review

Honoring your impact: A Grateful Year-End Message Cystic Fibrosis ACT
As we close out 2024, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the incredible progress we’ve made and express our deepest gratitude for your ongoing support.

This year, with your help, Cystic Fibrosis ACT has been able to expand our support services and resources for those living with cystic fibrosis here in Canberra. Your generosity has enabled us to provide much-needed assistance to local families, strengthen our community ties, and raise awareness of the challenges that come with Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

Thank you Andrew, for your lasting Legacy

As we reflect on this year, we also honor members whose journeys have taken different paths—whether moving interstate, transitioning to adult care, or, like our dear Andrew Hope, no longer with us. Earlier this year, Andrew’s family contributed to CFACT’s efforts by encouraging donations in his memory, raising over $24,000 to support healthcare devices for our members in the Canberra Region.

Each of these individuals leaves a lasting legacy in our community, and their spirit is at the heart of CFACT’s mission. Thank you all for your steadfast support and dedication to creating a brighter future for those with cystic fibrosis.

We would also like to thank the Tall Foundation, Capital Chemist, and the Canberra Southern Cross Club for their on-going support in 2024. From financial assistance for treatments to creating opportunities for emotional support, your contributions – whether through donations, or advocacy – have directly impacted the lives of individuals and families in Canberra. Your unwavering commitment has made 2024 a year of hope and progress, and we are incredibly grateful to have you by our side.

As we look to the future, we are filled with optimism for the continued work ahead. With your support, we will continue to expand and improve our services to ensure that those affected by CF in our community have the resources and support they need to live their fullest lives.

Thank you for your dedication and for standing with us in 2024. We are excited to continue this journey with you in the coming year.

2024 Year in Review

Advocacy and Awareness

Through partnerships, fundraising, and awareness efforts, Cystic Fibrosis ACT advocates for better healthcare policies, improved access to treatments, and support for those living with CF in Canberra.

In 2024, we worked closely with Cystic Fibrosis Australia to expand Trikafta on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to include the 2+yr age group. We were in Parliament during Minister Butler’s announcement, ensuring the CFACT voices were heard.

Financial Relief for CF Families

CFACT offers financial assistance to reduce the financial strain of medical and medication costs, helping members manage the essential, yet often overwhelming, expenses associated with cystic fibrosis care.

In 2024, we provided over $20,000 in direct support to our community. This assistance enabled access to vital medical equipment such as nebulisers, essential vitamins, and enrollment in physical activities that promote respiratory health and overall wellbeing. By supporting these critical needs, CFACT is committed to empowering individuals with CF to live healthier and more active lives.

Fundraising

Our 2024 raffle was a tremendous success, raising essential funds to support cystic fibrosis care and resources. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to Klara for winning the grand prize!

Additionally, the Canberra Thoroughbred event was a standout, bringing together the broader community support and generating critical funds. We were thrilled to secure over $2,600 from the event, directly benefiting our cystic fibrosis community.

Looking to the future, however, Cystic Fibrosis ACT (CFACT) is facing a critical gap in resources as the demand for support continues to grow among the local Canberra community. While CFACT has made significant strides in supporting individuals and families living with cystic fibrosis, the number of people seeking assistance has outpaced the available funding. Many families are still struggling to access the health resources, financial support, and specialized care they need to manage the complex, lifelong challenges of CF. Additionally, there is ongoing advocacy and research that is required to assist those within our community who do not yet have access to the treatments they require.

This gap is particularly concerning as CF impacts not only the physical health of individuals but also their emotional and financial well-being. With the rising cost of living, many local families are unable to cover the necessary expenses of medications and treatments. Funding is urgently needed to ensure that the local CF community in Canberra can access the care, support and be represented in advocacy, as they deserve.

With increased resources, CFACT can continue to support local families with financial assistance, and advocate for policies that improve CF care. More funding would also allow CFACT to foster connection, reduce isolation, and provide critical information to those affected by CF. Investing in CFACT means investing in the well-being of Canberra’s CF community, helping ensure that no one faces these challenges alone.
