Arest cf – a new research group

The Australian Respiratory Early Surveillance Team for Cystic Fibrosis (www.arestcf.org) has established a new research group called the Psychosocial Research Group. The aim of this group is to look at how families and children live with CF; how their social environment and emotional health affects, and is affected by CF; and ways in which we can improve the health and quality of life of families living with CF.

The psychosocial research group is about to launch a large study looking into how families of young children with CF function, cope, and relate with each other to see how this may affect the health of children with CF. They want to know if family and social factors have an impact on child health in early life. This is very important as it may mean we can improve the health of children with CF by supporting families better and helping them making changes to the family setting that promote better health.

Over the coming months you may be asked if you would like to be involved in this study by the group researchers, Sam Grogan and Cindy Branch-Smith. Taking part is voluntary and involves answering questions about family life, emotional health and social information (like your income, where you live, etc). Children will not have to do anything extra in this study: this is one for the parents and carers!

If you would like any more information about this study, please do not hesitate to contact the research team. They will be very happy to answer your questions. Samantha Grogan and Cindy Branch-Smith are research co-ordinators, and can be contacted on (08) 9489 7818.
