CF Drugs being put forward to PBAC - please support

03/Feb/2011

For the first time three drugs are being put forward for CF to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC)

medicine

The PBAC makes recommendations and gives advice to the Government about which drugs and medicinal preparations should be made available as pharmaceutical benefits.

CF has not had new drugs put forward to the PBAC for some years so it is important that the CF community gets behind this opportunity and make their comments known to PBAC by their 9th February deadline.

The three applications for the March PBAC meeting are as follows:

  1. Novartis Pharma’s re-submission for Tobramycin, an inhaled antibiotic for the treatment of lung infection in patients with CF.
  2. Phebra Pty Ltd’s new application for Colistimethate Sodium. A powder for nebuliser solution, inhaled antibiotic for treatment of lung infections in patients with CF.
  3. Pharmaxis Ltd’s new application for Mannitol, a capsule containing powder for oral inhalation in treating the lungs of people with CF.

Drugs 1 and 2 are antibiotics and are critical for CF care in treating lung infections in patients with CF. Drug No. 3 is a new novel way of treating CF totally developed in Australia, by an Australia based company.

We urge all of our members to provide feedback directly to the PBAC by 9 February 2011 via: http://www.pbs.gov.au/info/industry/listing/elements/pbac-meetings/pbac-agenda.
