Cystic Fibrosis New South Wales

Dragon Breathes Life for CF

07/Jan/2008

St Marys Leagues Club was the venue for rock band Dragon as they breathed life into their timeless hits in support of Cystic Fibrosis on Friday 12 October 2007.

The night began with a welcome from organiser, Sharon Flynn, who dedicated the night to the memory of Melanie Andrews. Some heartfelt words from Margaret, Melanie’s mother, stressed the importance of not only continued research into Cystic Fibrosis, but also the need to raise the profile of organ donation in Australia.

Comedian, Mick Meredith, soon had the 130 strong audience laughing in their seats, no-one prepared to move in case they became the subject of one of his jokes. Mick chose to move around the room for his performance which made for a very intimate show.

A young, local song writing duo was given the opportunity to perform a short set. For their debut public appearance Jess (a friend of Melanie’s) and Brandon performed a few original numbers as well as a stirring rendition of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.

Mick Meredith kept everyone entertained as lucky door prizes, donated by EDC (Entertainment Distributors Company), Panthers Flavours restaurant; Penrith Whitewater, Nutri-metics, Parramatta Leagues Club, Netball Australia and vega 95.3fm were drawn.

Three silent auctions; an autographed football donated by St George Bank, Campbelltown, a framed CF t-shirt autographed by Dragon, Jenny Morris, Angry Anderson and Doc Neeson, and a CF cap autographed by Jon Stevens, raised $465. Mick also officiated on two live auctions; a framed, autographed Holden Race Team shirt donated by Heartland Holden, Penrith, and a bass guitar autographed by Suzi Quatro, that raised $1250.

Dragon took to the stage shortly afterwards for their hour and a quarter set. It didn’t take long till the dance floor was overflowing as the audience sang and danced along to classic tunes like April Sun in Cuba, Rain and Are You Old Enough.

The evening closed with the drawing of the raffle of autographed CD’s donated by Liberation Music that raised over $500. Another $400 was spent at the merchandise table where volunteer, Shauna, was happily assisting guests.

The event was enjoyed by all and a great success with a total of $4000 donated to Cystic Fibrosis NSW. Dragon Breathes Life was organised by Sharon Flynn.
