65km Swim - Feb 6

Saturday 6th February 2010

Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre, Remembrance Drive, Picton

mfrench

We are looking for swimmers, teams and SPONSORS!

Last year's event was unbelievable - we raised more than $36,000 for kids living with CF.

There is a slideshow of pictures from last year's swim here so you can see the fun we had!

You don't have to swim the whole 65km yourself. Everyone's laps will be counted on the day to beat the 65km.  Or if your team is keen you can set yourselves a goal to crack on your own.

The day is for swimmers of all levels. Last year we even had non-swimmers wearing flippers and floaties in our non-swimmer lanes and then experienced lap swimmers and state champions in other lanes. The day is for everyone and everyone is welcome!!!

All you have to do is turn up on the day - with any sponsorship money you have collected and jump in the pool. We will have kids activities, a novelty relay, face painting, barbecue, raffle prizes and an auction on the day.

There are more than 80 people, mostly children, living with CF in Macarthur. It's a horrible disease that can cut young lives too short.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common life threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children. Symptoms can include poor weight gain, troublesome coughs and repeated chest infections.

To register as an individual swimmer or with a team just email - Soraiya Gharahkhani - sgharahkhani@fairfaxmedia.com.au

The fundraising website is here and you can create your own page (team or individual) so people can sponsor you to swim.

Here is a sponsorship form you can use to keep track of your sponsors in the lead up to the big swim on February 6.  Feel free to print out as many as you need for yourself or your team members.  As you can see people can sponsor you per lap or with a single donation.  Just bring this with you to the pool on the day with your cash and/or cheques. I will have some money counters there to collect and count for us.

All cheques should be made out to Cystic Fibrosis NSW

Remember to tell people that donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. I have receipt books here if you need some or we can write them out for you on the day if you wish.

Can't wait to see you all on February 6!!! For more info on the swim click here!

I'll swim the laps, you give the cash - Michelle Fenech

The first time I watched the movie Aladdin I wrote a list of what I would wish for if I had my own blue genie.
The movie was released in 1992 when I was nine, so I'm pretty sure a puppy and a new pair of rollerblades topped the list.
But today there's only one thing I want - a cure for the lung disease cystic fibrosis.
I don't think it's too much to ask. I don't want to win Lotto or fly to Disneyland.
I just want to live in a world where no child has to die from this horrible condition.
But there are no blue genies, and I don't have a medical degree, so all I can do is raise as much money as I can to help the doctors looking for a cure.
On February 6, I will hit the pool again with hundreds of locals to raise awareness and money for Cystic Fibrosis NSW.
I'm prepared to swim as many laps as it takes to raise the money needed and I'm now looking for sponsors.
This week I have set a challenge for local businesses: name your price and the number of laps you want me to swim to earn your donation and I will do it.
My best friend has CF and is now on the lung transplant list.
I know how hard she will have to fight when her new lungs arrive so, no matter how many laps I swim, nothing could compare to what she will go through.
I might swim all day, until I'm out of breath, but children with CF are out of breath for most of their short lives.
There are 80 people living in Macarthur with CF, some of them in Wollondilly, so it's great to see so many locals sign up to swim and support our swimathon.
It's a serious condition and we need a cure fast.
If you get a chance to drop by the pool on Saturday, February 6, I will introduce you to some of the beautiful kids you are supporting.
Their courage will amaze you, their big smiles will inspire you and their situation will break your heart.
I'm calling on any sponsors to challenge me and I will swim until the water feels like concrete for my best friend and every other child like her.
Without a blue genie, it's the least I can do.
