Cystic Fibrosis in Australia

Kalan's Story

Hi, my name is Kalan William, I was born on the 24th June 2006.  I was born at the John Hunter Hospital at 9:23pm after 21hrs of my mum being in labour and I was a healthy 3.5kgs.

I was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at 24hrs old as my bowel and bladder weren't working like normal and my grandfather sat with me all night so mum could get some sleep. At 48hrs old I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis but needed to have a sweat test at 6 weeks to confirm I had it.  I also had my first operation at 48hrs old to clean out my bowel.  I was on oxygen for 5 days after my operation.

At 1 week old I went in for my second operation, this time it was to cut out about 10cms of bowel because it was dead and bring the bowel to the top of my stomach. I was on oxygen for 2 days after my operation.

I was 5 weeks old when I went for my third and final operation.  This time it was to rejoin my bowel as I wasn't absorbing enough nutrients and vitamins. I wasn't on oxygen after this operation!!!!

I was in hospital for 4 and half months.  Today I am a healthy 11 month old weighing 10kgs.

My mum tried to stay strong but at times thought she couldn't do it but then she thought of me and how much I needed her.

If it wasn't for me being born and having this condition my mum would not be the person she is today. She knows in times of need God will always be there no matter what the outcome.
