$310,000 Tasmanian Research Grant

The Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation has given a $310,000 grant to researchers Kevin Sanderson and Louise Roddam for two years.
As part of the CF research group at the RHH headed by Dr David Reid, their research will focus on the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and how it thrives in the lungs of a person with CF.
"The bacteria are very clever and adaptable and we're hoping to look at what it's doing there and start to give it things it can't adapt to. The best outcome would be for a therapy that could reduce the damage the bacterium do to the lungs" Dr Sanderson stated.
Dr Roddam said she would be testing how the bacteria adapted so well.
"Certain strains are particular to different areas and the strain particular to Tasmania means people are sicker and have more hospitalisation," Dr Roddam said.
