Cystic Fibrosis Tasmania is delighted to offer these new scholarships to our members living with CF. Named in honour of our immediate Past President, Aaron Mackrill, who lost his battle with Cystic Fibrosis on Anzac Day 2010, these scholarships have been made possible by the generous support of the MyState Financial Foundation who provided a $5,000 grant, on top of over $8,000 in donations from people who knew Aaron.

Aaron valued the concept of education and life-long learning. Following his lung transplant in the year 2000 he went on to complete his qualification as a Registered Nurse and worked at the Hobart Private Hospital. The amount of voluntary work that Aaron undertook while holding down a job was incredible. It was this inspiring work that led to him being named as the Tasmanian Young Achiever of the Year in 2008.

It was Aaron’s instruction that in lieu of flowers at his funeral that donations be given to CFT to establish a scholarship program so that others with CF could benefit from further education as he had done. CFT have worked closely with members of Aaron’s immediate family to develop this program as a fitting tribute to a remarkable young man who sadly lost his battle with CF at the age of just 29 years.

The Aaron Mackrill Memorial Scholarships are available to CFT members with Cystic Fibrosis who wish to study at a post senior secondary level, on either a full or part time basis. Scholarships will be awarded twice a year on a non-competitive basis. Scholarship holders will receive annual payments that will vary according to whether the study is on a full or part time basis. Full time students will receive annual payments of $250, for up to four years of study.

Applications are now open for those eligible students wishing to commence study in 2012.
