The Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust will fund four new projects in 2010

“Viral burden in infants with Cystic Fibrosis.” – Funded by the LJ Hooker CF Research Trust - $91,906

 

The team led by Chief Investigator, Professor P.D. Sly will investigate the role of viral pathogens in the first two years of life. Previous studies on bacterial infections in young children with CF have been examined by some groups, but very little has been done on viral infections. The research will be carried out in Western Australia.

“Development of noval assay for the detection of clonal P. Aeruginosa in persons with CF.” - $68,950



This study is considered to be of very high clinical value with the aim being to improve surveillance of life threatening infection caused by clonal strains of pseudomonas aeruginosa in people with CF. This remains an ongoing and important concern for CF care in Australia. The research will be carried in Queensland by a team led by Dr D.M Whiley.

“Trial of nebulised 0.0% vs 6% saline for people with cystic fibrosis.” – $95,723



This study will provide a logical extension to the investigators previous successful study into nebulised saline. Hypertonic Saline treatment has become a routine clinic procedure, although, this study will provide answers for those with severe lung disease to those with moderate to mild lung disease and for those who do not tolerate salt well. Associate Professor P. Bye will head this research team in New South Wales.

This study aims to investigate clinical management of an important and common problem for people with CF. Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes (CFRD). The aims as stated could see significant changes in the time course management of CFRD.
